Short Bio

Royston Uning is a Research Associate for the Global Atmospheric Chemistry Section at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), JAPAN. His main research interest has always been disentangling the important or potential role(s) of biogenic and anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere towards air quality and as climate forcing. His current work is mainly but not limited to ground- and ship-based observations of a range of atmospheric VOCs in JAPAN and as well as in the western Pacific Ocean. In 2024, he was invited to serve as a speaker at the 2024 Meeting of Biogenic Hydrocarbons and the Atmosphere Gordon Research Conference, a highly prestigious Conference, which was held in Castelldefels, Barcelona SPAIN. His research profile was also featured in one of the Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) research project workshop reports, "Frontiers in ocean-atmosphere exchange: Air-sea interface and fluxes of mass and energy" which was held at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques de Cargèse (IESC), FRANCE. Currently, he serves as one of the SOLAS Southeast Asia Regional Panels.

He received the "Best Undergraduate Dissertation" award in Solid State Science from the Malaysian Solid State Science and Technology Society (MASS). He received twice the "Best Oral Presenter" award at scientific conferences during his graduate studies. He authored and co-authored more than 10 peer-reviewed research articles during his Ph.D. at Talib Laboratory. Furthermore, he published 5 peer-reviewed research articles during his Post-Doc at the Institute of Oceanography and Environment, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, MALAYSIA.

Outside of work, he enjoys mountain biking and spending time by the sea. He currently lives in Tsukuba, JAPAN, and originally hails from Sabah, MALAYSIA.
