Short Bio
Royston Uning is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Malaysia, and a visiting researcher at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan. He studies atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission sources, composition, and their role in recent air quality (e.g., ozone). In 2024, he was invited to speak at the highly prestigious Gordon Research Conference Meeting on Biogenic Hydrocarbons and the Atmosphere, held in Castelldefels, Barcelona, Spain. His research profile was also featured in one of the Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) research project workshop reports, "Frontiers in ocean-atmosphere exchange: Air-sea interface and fluxes of mass and energy," which was held at the Institut d'Études Scientifiques de Cargèse (IESC), France. Currently, he serves as a member of the SOLAS Southeast Asia Regional Panel and is a participant in the Tokyo-Field Campaign, a collaborative effort between NASA and key Japanese scientific institutions, including NIES, and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).
He received the "Best Undergraduate Dissertation" award in Solid State Science from the Malaysian Solid State Science and Technology Society (MASS). He also received twice the "Best Oral Presenter" award at scientific conferences during his graduate studies. He authored and co-authored more than 10 peer-reviewed research articles during his PhD years and published 7 peer-reviewed research articles as the first author during his postdoctoral years at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia, and the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time by the sea and mountain biking. He is originally from Sabah, Malaysia, where he currently lives.
